Coming soon to Art166.com.

The Backstory -

Last night, I dragged myself from my hacking, wheezing, sickbed to attend the high school graduation of one of my favorite people in the world.

After crossing several HUGE hurdles -- leaving the house, walking from the parking lot to the auditorium, and STEPS! -- I gratefully collapsed into a seat, sucking on my inhaler like a baby to a bottle of chocolate milk.

It was all worth it; not only did I get to share in the graduation, but the auditorium is an amazing piece of architecture! Typically, during all the speeches and introductions, I spent my time taking photos of the fabulous, vintage interior.

Of course I did!

Though I didn't feel up to working with them last night, I did pick a couple and gave them a quick treatment this morning. Sitting underneath this massive, glowing structure was pretty intriguing stuff. I couldn't take my eyes (or lens) off of it!

Easy, wheezy fun!

Those are cool! our gym- not so cool. high schools built in the 70's are kinda - um- uninteresting. glad to know YOU behaved... are you taking some antihistimines?

You evidently don't let a little cold-suffering stand in the way of your creativity...I think you may be a shark baby your self;)

  3. Hey, Karen, glad you like 'em. I ALWAYS behave in public. Of course, that depends on one's exact definition of "behave". Yep, I've been on antihistamines my entire life. Right now, I'm looking for something that actually works. Claritin, my Last Big Thing, has given up the ghost. Not that I could afford a new RX, anyway.

  4. Hope you are feeling better, and found something that works.

  5. You take pictures and I count all the little squares. There is something in the celing for all of us. wheezy I understand.

  6. Hi, Tammi! Nope, no "shark baby" here. I'm thinking a Great White, baring my rows of spiky-sharp teeth. Or, maybe, a Hammerhead, plowing through any obstacle by sheer force! Yep, that's my new name. How does this sound: Hammerhead St. Christopher, Digital Artist!

And, unfortunately, I don't have a cold; it's chronic asthma, with not a cure in sight. No way would I subject thousands of (theoretically!) innocent people to my cold or flue bug. That's one of my pet peeves -- people who know they're contagious should keep their wandering germs at home!

  7. oh poo I just sneezed on the screen!!!!!!!

Grand auditoriums, or cathedrals can make you dizzy while you delight in their grandeur. I can see why you delighted in this one and was compelled to photograph it :)

ps.Not to worry though, it's just the lergy (allergies). sniffle! sniffle!

  8. I'm glad to hear you were able to make it out of the house to attend the graduation ceremony and found something so interesting to photograph. I am really enjoying your manipulations and alterations! I hope you're feeling better.

  9. Good morning, Dr. John!

This is my favorite comment I've received from you:

You take pictures and I count all the little squares. There is something in the ceiling for all of us.

You know, I try to resist getting "deep" early in the morning, but that is one seriously profound statement.

It's true that we all seek out the components of any situation that are relevant or appealing to us, personally. In this instance, for me, the joy was in electronically capturing the image and preserving the, arguably, fantastic vision of form, function, and beauty of the historical architecture that was literally hanging over my head. For you, it was recognizing the aesthetics of a pleasing pattern, which created those glowing, little squares; then, following your observation to a conclusion by actually counting them out.

We both benefit from the experience in our own ways. As a creative spirit, I couldn't ask for more.

Dr. John, my kindred wheezer, your exquisitely complex mind is some kind of wonderful!

  10. Ugh! Incorrigible Jafa! Hold on a sec, I've gotta get my anti-bacterial wipes!

    . . .

    . . .

    There, that's better. Now,

You're so right. Had I been mobile that night, I would have taken hundreds of pics! Some of the carving and other details, inside and out, were incredible! I used to attend concerts there, but had never been there in daylight (which it was when we arrived). I'll put it on my endless list of "Things To Do."

  11. 'Morning, Cynthia!

Well, this was one I couldn't miss, so I was going to be there -- even if the ER was the next stop!

I'm glad you're enjoying the images; you know how great it is to have your work appreciated!

I'm thinking about feeling better, though we've got big rains moving in today, which means the mold count will shoot up like crazy in a day or two, which doesn't bode well . . .

    Ah, such is life!

I hope all is well with your mom!

  12. Hi, Betty! It's great to see you here!

Everyone, meet Betty, a.k.a. Mrs. Dr. John!

Thanks for the well-wishes, Betty. Nothing really works, but I hold off the symptoms whenever and however I can. Of course, you know a thing or two about dealing with wheezers . . .

  18. Sorry you have asthma W.J. and I hope the wheezes are eased up by now. I'm glad you got to go to the graduation. You do some magic things with architecture and I love these!!

Aw, sorry to hear you were sick, but it takes a really awesome friend to drag themself out, sick, for someone else. My HS grad was in an outdoor audotorium where they do concerts, that was a long time ago, but our school auditorium was nothing special either.

Oh, and I wanted to say, your art is awesome! :)

  20. Heimdallr! Welcome to Art166; there's not much I appreciate more than a regular visitor! As far as how it's done? A few words:

    1. Camera!
    2. Photoshop!
    3. Irregular brain chemistry!

It's Friday morning, and for the first time this week, I am feeling a little better. Thanks for the positive vibes!

  21. Hi, 3C! I'm feeling a bit better, already.

The auditorium really is gorgeous. It was constructed in the '20's. So was my house, but the auditorium's in much better condition!

  22. Thank you, kindly, m@hu_D! (How do you pronounce that, exactly?) Drop by, anytime!

  23. Lynette, the wheezes are easing, some; though it's been a v-e-r-y long week. Thanks for helping to 'wish me well'.

I really enjoy architectural photos, and they're wonderful to manipulate. (I'm always willing to mess around with a good thing!) I'm glad you enjoyed these. For some reason, I'd love to see them hanging in a traditional, cozy, home library.

  24. Welcome, KristynMarie! I don't think I'd even consider attending an outdoor graduation, here. It's too, too, hot at this time of year (most of the year, really)!

"Awesome"! I like that comment! Hope you stop by, again. The door's always open!
